A spring rises inside a temple courtyard and fills two long bathing pools, each fed by a row of stone spouts, small fountains set into the wall. Balinese families come to move along the spouts in order, praying at each one. This has continued since the tenth century. It still happens every day.
You are welcome to take part. There is a way to do it properly.
How to do it properly
- Wear a sarong. The temple provides them, and so do we.
- Women who are menstruating do not enter the water. Please follow this rule. There is no checkpoint at the entrance. We are trusting you.
- Enter the pool at the first spout and move along in order.
- Do not use the last two spouts. They are for funeral ceremonies only.
- Do not photograph people while they are praying.
Go before 8:00 in the morning if you can. By ten it is crowded. The water is not what makes this place special. The people praying are.
